About San Sebastián Aquarium & Naval Museum

San Sebastián's historic aquarium at the tip of the old town peninsula, home to a spectacular shark tunnel, whale and dolphin skeletons, and the Naval Museum exploring the Basque maritime tradition, from whalers to navigators.

The Aquarium of San Sebastián is located at the tip of the peninsula that separates La Concha bay from the harbour, in a building that has been a place of scientific maritime study since 1928. The aquarium contains impressive displays of Atlantic and subtropical marine life, with a 360-degree underwater tunnel (15 metres long) where sharks, rays, and large fish circle overhead. Attached to the aquarium is the Naval Museum (Untzi Museoa), which tells the remarkable story of Basque maritime culture: the Basque were among the world's greatest whalers in the 16th and 17th centuries, hunting bowhead whales in the waters off Newfoundland and Labrador and operating whaling stations there long before any other European nation. The museum also covers the Basque contribution to global navigation, the Basque navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the first circumnavigation of the globe (1519-1522) after Magellan's death, in one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of exploration. A preserved whale skeleton hangs above the main exhibition hall.

Did you know? Basque whalers had established whaling stations in Red Bay, Labrador (Canada) by 1550, 57 years before the first permanent English settlement in North America (Jamestown, 1607). The Red Bay site has been excavated since the 1970s and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving the remains of a complete 16th-century Basque whaling operation.
