About Hondarribia (Fuenterrabía)

A beautifully preserved medieval walled town on the Bidasoa estuary 20 kilometres east of San Sebastián, the Spanish frontier town facing France, with a 10th-century castle, colourful fishermen's houses, Baroque church, and famous pintxos bars in the lower port.

Hondarribia (called Fuenterrabía in Spanish) is one of the most beautiful medieval walled towns in the Basque Country, a compact hilltop fortified town on the southern bank of the Bidasoa estuary, directly facing the French town of Hendaye across the water. The town has been a frontier fortress since Roman times and its walls, gates, and castle, the Castillo de Carlos V, now a state parador hotel, reflect its turbulent history as the principal crossing point between Spain and France along the Atlantic coast. The upper town (the medieval walled area) is tightly packed with old stone houses decorated with carved coats of arms and wrought iron balconies; the lower town (La Marina) is a neighbourhood of brightly painted fishermen's houses, pink, ochre, yellow, and red, with excellent pintxos bars at street level. The Baroque church of Santa María de la Asunción (17th century) is one of the finest in the Basque Country, and the town holds an unusual annual religious procession called the Alarde, which commemorates its 1638 defence against a French siege.

Did you know? The Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659), which ended the Franco-Spanish War and established the current border between France and Spain, was negotiated on the Île des Faisans (Pheasant Island), a tiny island in the middle of the Bidasoa river between Hondarribia and the French bank, a condominium jointly administered by Spain and France.
