About Church of Our Lady before Týn (Chrám Matky Boží před Týnem)

The twin-towered Gothic church on Old Town Square's east side, once the great Hussite sanctuary and the burial place of astronomer Tycho Brahe, its mismatched spires nicknamed Adam and Eve.

The Church of Our Lady before Týn is the Gothic landmark on the eastern side of Old Town Square, its two steep towers, each about eighty metres tall, forming the most recognisable silhouette on Prague's Old Town skyline. Work on the present church began around the mid-fourteenth century, under the influence of the Peter Parler workshop, and was largely finished by the early sixteenth. The deliberately unequal towers are nicknamed Adam and Eve.

For much of the fifteenth and early seventeenth centuries the church was the main sanctuary of Prague's Hussite movement; a golden Utraquist chalice on the gable was later replaced by a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary. Inside lies the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, who died in Prague in 1601, beneath a red marble monument near the high altar. Its name recalls the fortified Týn merchants' courtyard that once stood behind it.

Did you know? The church's two towers are deliberately mismatched: the southern one, nicknamed Adam, is slightly broader and taller than its northern twin, Eve, an asymmetry old Praguers read as the masculine and feminine sides.
