About Mucha Museum (Muchovo muzeum)
A compact museum in a Baroque palace on Panská Street devoted to Alfons Mucha, the Czech Art Nouveau master, showing his Paris posters and panels, though not the Slav Epic.
The Mucha Museum on Panská Street is dedicated to Alfons Mucha, the Czech master of Art Nouveau who lived from 1860 to 1939. Run by the Mucha Foundation, it opened in 1998 in the Baroque Kaunický Palace and shows a selection of around eighty works: his celebrated Parisian posters, decorative panels, pattern books, drawings, pastels, photographs and personal belongings.
Mucha's fame began with a poster made over the New Year of 1894 and 1895 for the actress Sarah Bernhardt, which led to a contract of some six years and the flowing style now identified with Art Nouveau. Visitors should note that his monumental cycle the Slav Epic is not displayed here; those twenty vast canvases have been shown mainly in Moravský Krumlov and Prague's Trade Fair Palace. Since 2025 a separate, larger Mucha museum has also opened in the city, so it is worth checking which location a ticket refers to.
Did you know? Mucha shot to fame with a poster for the actress Sarah Bernhardt's play Gismonda, made over the New Year of 1894 and 1895; its success won him a contract of roughly six years.
