About Klementinum (Clementinum)

A vast former Jesuit college in the Old Town, home to a sumptuous Baroque library of 1722, an astronomical tower that once signalled noon, and Central Europe's longest weather record.

The Klementinum (Clementinum) is a vast former Jesuit college in the Old Town, begun after the Jesuits came to Prague in 1556 and expanded through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Covering around two hectares, it is the second-largest building complex in Prague after the Castle, and has housed the country's central library since 1782; today it is the seat of the National Library of the Czech Republic.

Its showpiece is the Baroque Library Hall of 1722, with a ceiling fresco by Jan Hiebl and historic globes standing below. The Astronomical Tower was used to determine true noon, marked by a flag raised for the city. The complex also holds the Mirror Chapel of 1724, still a concert venue, and a meteorological station whose daily temperature readings, kept since 1775, form the longest continuous weather record in Central Europe.

Did you know? A popular myth places Johannes Kepler in the Klementinum's Astronomical Tower. He was indeed imperial mathematician in Prague, but he left in 1612, and the tower rose only around 1722, over a century later.
