About Powder Tower / Powder Gate (Prašná brána)

A late-Gothic gate tower from 1475 marking the start of Prague's Royal Route; named for its later use as a gunpowder store and restyled by Josef Mocker in the 1880s.

The Powder Tower is a late-Gothic gate on the edge of Prague's Old Town, its foundation stone laid in 1475. It replaced a dilapidated medieval gate and was designed not for defence but as an ornamental ceremonial entrance, one of the Old Town's thirteen original gates. Master mason Matěj Rejsek took over the work from 1478 and covered the stone in rich sculptural detail.

Construction halted when King Vladislav II Jagiellon moved the royal residence up to Prague Castle in the 1480s, leaving the tower unfinished for centuries. Its lasting name comes from its later use as a gunpowder store from the late seventeenth century. The elaborate neo-Gothic appearance seen today is largely the work of architect Josef Mocker, who restored and completed the tower between 1875 and 1886. It marks the traditional start of the Royal Route toward Prague Castle, and rises about sixty-five metres.

Did you know? The Powder Tower was never a fortress but a ceremonial gate, marking the start of the Royal Route that once carried Bohemian kings across the Old Town to their coronation at Prague Castle.
