About Estates Theatre (Stavovské divadlo)
One of Europe's best-preserved Classicist theatres, opened in 1783, where Mozart conducted the world premiere of Don Giovanni in 1787 and Miloš Forman later filmed scenes for Amadeus.
The Estates Theatre (Stavovské divadlo) opened in 1783 as the Nostitz Theatre, built by Count František Antonín Nostitz-Rieneck, and is one of the best-preserved late-eighteenth-century Classicist theatres in Europe, surviving in largely original form. The Bohemian Estates bought it in 1798, giving it its present name; today it is one of the stages of the National Theatre in Prague.
The theatre is famous above all for Mozart, who conducted the world premiere of Don Giovanni here on 29 October 1787, an opera written for Prague and dedicated to its people. He returned in 1791 for the premiere of La clemenza di Tito, staged for the coronation of Leopold II as King of Bohemia. In 1834 the future Czech national anthem was first performed here, and Miloš Forman filmed the opera sequences of Amadeus in the theatre.
