About Igreja de São Francisco

Porto's most spectacular church interior, a Gothic structure whose entire interior was covered in an explosion of carved and gilded Baroque woodwork using an estimated 300–600 kg of gold, the most lavish Baroque interior in Portugal.

The Igreja de São Francisco is one of the most extraordinary religious interiors in Europe, a Gothic church whose entire interior surface was transformed in the late 17th and early 18th centuries by an overwhelming explosion of gilded carved wood in the Portuguese Baroque style. Built as a Franciscan convent church beginning in 1383, the exterior is a restrained Gothic structure with a beautiful 14th-century rose window. But step inside and the contrast is total: every column, arch, wall surface, and altar is covered in writhing, organic forms carved in wood and covered in gold leaf, estimated to involve between 300 and 600 kilograms of gold in total. The effect is overwhelming, a golden cave, a universe of carved figures, angels, vines, and allegorical scenes. The main altarpiece features the Tree of Jesse, showing the genealogy of Christ. Beneath the church are the catacombs, where the remains of over 200 Franciscan monks lie in open ossuary pits.

Did you know? The interior of São Francisco is estimated to contain between 300 and 600 kilograms of gold leaf applied to carved walnut wood, making it one of the most lavishly gilded church interiors in the world.
