About Clérigos Tower

Porto's iconic 76-metre Baroque tower, built between 1732 and 1763 by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, offering panoramic views from its 225 steps and dominating the city skyline.

The Torre dos Clérigos is Porto's most iconic vertical landmark and the defining feature of its skyline. Designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni and built in stages between 1732 and 1763, the tower stands 76 metres tall, the tallest building in Porto for most of its history. The tower is attached to the oval-plan Igreja dos Clérigos, also designed by Nasoni in a flowing Baroque style that was quite unlike the more austere Romanesque and Gothic traditions that had dominated Portuguese religious architecture. The tower served a practical purpose as a navigational landmark for ships approaching Porto from the sea, visible from miles away on the horizon. Today visitors climb 225 steps to reach the panoramic viewing gallery at the top, from which the entire historic centre, the Douro Valley, and on clear days the Atlantic coast are visible. The view from the top is one of the finest in Porto.

Did you know? The Clérigos Tower served as a navigational landmark for ships approaching Porto from the Atlantic, its 76-metre height made it visible from miles out to sea, guiding mariners to the mouth of the Douro.
