About Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto)

Porto's fortress-like Romanesque cathedral begun in the 12th century, standing on the highest point of the old city with a beautiful Gothic cloister adorned with 18th-century azulejo panels.

Porto Cathedral, known as the Sé do Porto, is the oldest and most important religious monument in Porto, commanding the city from its hilltop position in the historic centre. Construction began in the early 12th century, making it one of the most significant Romanesque buildings in Portugal, though subsequent centuries brought Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical additions. The austere granite façade with its twin Romanesque towers gives the building a fortress-like character. The interior underwent Baroque transformation in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Gothic cloister, dating from the 14th century, is one of the cathedral's greatest treasures: its lower level is adorned with magnificent 18th-century blue-and-white azulejo tile panels depicting scenes from the Song of Solomon and the life of the Virgin. A 14th-century Gothic chapel of São João Evangelista contains the tombs of João Gordo, a knight of the Order of the Hospital. The cathedral terrace offers panoramic views over the Ribeira and the Douro.

Did you know? Porto Cathedral's cloister contains 18th-century azulejo panels painted by Valentim de Almeida illustrating the Song of Solomon and Ovid's Metamorphoses, an unusual combination of sacred and classical secular texts in a religious setting.
