About Ribeira
Porto's UNESCO World Heritage riverside district, a tangle of medieval alleys and colourful painted houses descending to the Douro quayside, lined with rabelo boats and restaurant terraces.
The Ribeira is Porto's ancient riverside quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most photographed district in the city. Squeezed between the steep granite hillside and the north bank of the Douro, Ribeira's narrow medieval streets and alleys descend in steps to the Cais da Ribeira, the riverfront quay that stretches beneath the Dom Luís I Bridge. The houses are among the most characterful in Portugal: tall, narrow buildings coated in azulejo tiles, painted plaster, or exposed stone, their facades in every shade of yellow, green, ochre, and blue. Many are visibly old and weathered, giving the district an atmosphere of living history. Rabelo boats, the traditional flat-bottomed wooden vessels that once transported Port wine barrels from the Douro Valley, are moored along the quayside. The square Praça da Ribeira, with its modern cube fountain, is the social heart of the district. The entire historic centre of Porto, including Ribeira, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Did you know? Porto's historic centre, including the Ribeira, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, recognised for its outstanding urban landscape and nearly two millennia of continuous occupation.
