Livraria Lello is one of the oldest and most architecturally spectacular bookshops in the world, opened in 1906 by brothers José and António Lello on Rua das Carmelitas in Porto's historic Baixa district. Designed by engineer Francisco Xavier Esteves in a fusion of neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau styles, the building features an extraordinary curved red-lacquer staircase rising to a gallery, a stained-glass geometric ceiling flooding the interior with colour, and carved dark-wood shelving reaching from floor to ceiling. The bookshop has been a genuine cultural institution of Porto for over a century, patronised by writers, scholars and book-lovers. J.K. Rowling lived in Porto from 1991 to 1993 and visited the shop regularly while writing early Harry Potter drafts; the interior is widely cited as an inspiration for Hogwarts library. A small entrance fee, refundable on any book purchase, manages visitor numbers.
