About Philippeion and Treasuries
The Philippeion, the round monument of Philip II of Macedon in the sacred grove of Olympia, with the treasuries of the Greek cities nearby and the Zanes, statues of Zeus paid for with cheaters' fines.
Philip II began the Philippeion after his victory at Chaeronea in 338 BC, and Alexander finished it. It is the only round building in the Altis. Nearby, a terrace of treasuries and the bases of the Zanes line the way to the stadium.
These monuments are part of the main site ticket. The Philippeion was partly restored in 2004 and is seen from the path. The treasuries and the Zanes are on the way to the stadium entrance.
Did you know? The Philippeion at Olympia, begun by Philip II after Chaeronea in 338 BC and finished by Alexander, is the only building in the Altis honouring human beings.
