About Archaeological Museum of Olympia

The Archaeological Museum of Olympia, one of the great museums of Greece, with the sculptures of the Temple of Zeus, the Hermes attributed to Praxiteles and the soaring Nike of Paionios.

The museum was built between 1966 and 1975 to designs by Patroklos Karantinos. Its twelve halls hold finds from the sanctuary: the gable sculptures of the Temple of Zeus, the Nike of Paionios and the Hermes of Olympia.

The museum is open every day, with longer hours in summer, and the same ticket covers the site. It has a ramp and a lift. Allow at least an hour and a half, and come in the heat of midday.

Did you know? The Nike of Paionios, made around 425 to 420 BC, once stood on a pillar about eight metres high beside the Temple of Zeus, as if flying down from the sky.
