About Way of Human Rights (Straße der Menschenrechte)
Dani Karavan's 1993 avenue beside the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, its concrete pillars inscribed with articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a counterpoint to the city's Nazi past.
The Way of Human Rights, the Strasse der Menschenrechte, is an environmental sculpture and avenue created by the Israeli artist Dani Karavan and inaugurated on 24 October 1993. It runs along Kartaeusergasse, between the old and new buildings of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, linking the Kornmarkt to the medieval city wall. It comprises a gateway and 27 white concrete pillars about eight metres high, together with two sunken pillars and a living oak, making thirty elements in all.
Each pillar is inscribed with one article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in German and in a second language, with the languages said to include those of peoples whose rights have been violated. The work resulted from a design competition held in 1988 during the museum's extension. Beside a city marked by its Nazi past, it stands as a deliberate counterpoint, freely accessible to the public.
Did you know? The avenue comprises a gateway and 27 white concrete pillars about eight metres high, plus two pillars sunk into the ground and a living oak, making thirty elements; some sources count 27, others 30.
