About Albrecht Dürer's House
This tall half-timbered house by the Tiergärtnertor was Albrecht Dürer's home from 1509 until his death in 1528, and has been a museum since 1871.
The Albrecht-Dürer-Haus stands on the Tiergärtnertor square, just below the castle, and was the home of the painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer. Built around 1420, it has sandstone walls on its lower two levels and timber framing above, under a half-hip roof. The astronomer Bernhard Walther bought it in 1501 and fitted it out as an observatory; Dürer acquired the house in 1509 and lived there until his death in 1528. It has been a museum since 1871.
Because most of Dürer's original works are held elsewhere, the house shows a changing mix of originals from the City of Nuremberg's graphic collection and reproductions, alongside period furnishings and a recreated workshop where historical printmaking is demonstrated. The building was significantly damaged by bombing in October 1944 and rebuilt by 1949, but only reopened as a museum in 1971, the 500th anniversary of Dürer's birth.
Did you know? Before Dürer, the astronomer Bernhard Walther bought the house in 1501 and used it as an observatory. Dürer acquired it in 1509 and lived there until his death in 1528.
