About St. Lorenz Church
St. Lorenz is a large, twin-towered Gothic church on the Pegnitz's southern bank, holding Veit Stoss's suspended Angelic Salutation and Adam Kraft's towering carved stone Sacrament House.
St. Lorenz, or St. Lawrence, is a large Gothic church on the southern side of Nuremberg's old town, its twin-towered west facade mirroring that of St. Sebald across the Pegnitz. Groundbreaking took place in 1250 and the nave was complete by around 1400, while the soaring Gothic hall choir was built between 1439 and 1477. In 1525 St. Lorenz became one of the first churches in Germany to adopt the Lutheran faith, and it remains a Lutheran parish church today.
The choir holds two celebrated works. Veit Stoss's Angelic Salutation, a group of near life-size limewood figures of the Annunciation, hangs freely on a chain, commissioned by Anton II Tucher in 1517. Nearby stands Adam Kraft's stone Sacrament House of 1493 to 1496, into which the sculptor carved a portrait of himself. The church was badly damaged in the Second World War and later restored.
Did you know? Veit Stoss's Angelic Salutation hangs on a chain in the choir, a ring of near life-size limewood figures of the Annunciation. Anton II Tucher commissioned it in 1517; sources usually date completion to 1518.
