About Nuremberg Imperial Castle (Kaiserburg)
The Kaiserburg crowns a sandstone ridge above the Altstadt. Long tied to the Holy Roman emperors, it pairs the round Sinwell Tower with a startlingly deep well.
The Imperial Castle, or Kaiserburg, stands on a sandstone ridge at the northern edge of Nuremberg's old town and ranks among the fortified complexes long associated with the Holy Roman Empire. Excavations have uncovered wall remnants dated to around the year 1000, and the site's first written record is a document issued there by Emperor Henry III in 1050. According to Wikipedia, all German kings and emperors stayed here, most of them repeatedly; Frederick II is recorded visiting at least sixteen times.
The cylindrical Sinwell Tower, whose name comes from a Middle High German word for "perfectly round", was raised in the later thirteenth century and heightened in the 1560s. The Deep Well and a Romanesque double chapel of about 1200 also survive. Heavily damaged in the Second World War, the castle was restored after 1945 and is now administered by the Bavarian palace authority.
Did you know? The keep's odd name, Sinwellturm, comes from a Middle High German word for "perfectly round". Built in the later thirteenth century, the round tower was made taller during rebuilding work in the 1560s.
