About Germanisches Nationalmuseum
Germany's largest museum of cultural history, in the southern old town, home to the Behaim Globe of 1492 to 1494 and collections running from prehistory to the present day.
The Germanisches Nationalmuseum, founded in 1852 by the Franconian baron Hans von und zu Aufsess and a circle of associates, stands on Kartaeusergasse in the southern old town, between the Kornmarkt and the medieval city wall. It is commonly described as Germany's largest museum of cultural history. The complex incorporates the former Nuremberg Charterhouse, a Carthusian monastery dissolved in 1525 and given to the museum in 1857, whose medieval cloister survives; later additions include neo-Gothic wings, the Heussbau of 1955 to 1958 and the Kartaeuserbau of 1993.
Its collections span prehistory to the present, taking in medieval and Renaissance art associated with Duerer, Cranach, Riemenschneider and Veit Stoss, decorative arts, arms and armour, and scientific and musical instruments. The most celebrated holding is the Behaim Globe, made in Nuremberg between 1492 and 1494 and described as the oldest surviving terrestrial globe. The museum reports around 1.3 million objects, with about 25,000 on display.
Did you know? The Behaim Globe, made in Nuremberg between 1492 and 1494, is described as the oldest surviving terrestrial globe. Because it predates news of Columbus reaching the city, it shows no American continent.
