About Handwerkerhof (Craftsmen's Courtyard)
A cluster of half-timbered craft workshops and eateries by the Koenigstor, opened in 1971 as a tourist re-creation rather than original medieval fabric, ringed by genuine city fortifications.
The Handwerkerhof, or Craftsmen's Courtyard, is a cluster of half-timbered, medieval-style buildings by the Koenigstor, housing craft workshops, small shops and eateries. It is a twentieth-century tourist re-creation rather than original medieval fabric: it opened on 1 April 1971, built for the Duerer Year marking the five hundredth anniversary of Albrecht Duerer's birth. Intended to be temporary, it was kept after unexpectedly high visitor numbers, and was constructed in historicist style by the exhibition organiser AFAG at a cost of about 800,000 Deutsche Mark.
The courtyard occupies the former Waffenhof, or arsenal court, within the ring of the last city fortifications near the main railway station. The surrounding gate and city wall are genuine late-medieval and early-modern fortifications, unlike the courtyard buildings themselves. Trades on site have included gingerbread makers, potters, pewterers, goldsmiths and doll-makers, and it sells regional specialities such as Nuremberg gingerbread and Franconian food.
Did you know? The courtyard opened on 1 April 1971 for the Duerer Year anniversary and was meant to be temporary. Visitor numbers ran so high that it was kept permanently rather than demolished as planned.
