About Herculaneum
Buried alongside Pompeii by Vesuvius in 79 AD but even better preserved, buildings stand to their second floors, wooden furniture survives, and organic materials found nowhere else make it the most extraordinary Roman site in the world.
Herculaneum was a prosperous Roman seaside town of about 4,000-5,000 inhabitants, destroyed along with Pompeii by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius on 24 August 79 AD. While Pompeii was buried under a thick layer of volcanic ash and pumice, Herculaneum was overwhelmed by a series of pyroclastic surges, superheated clouds of gas and volcanic material moving at enormous speed, that killed its population almost instantaneously but also sealed and preserved the town with extraordinary completeness. Unlike Pompeii, where the organic materials burned away, at Herculaneum carbonised wood, food, furniture, fabric, and even the wooden upper floors of multi-storey buildings survived. The site was re-discovered in 1709 and partially excavated from the late 18th century onward. Only about a third of ancient Herculaneum has been excavated; the rest lies beneath the modern city of Ercolano. The excavated portion is smaller than Pompeii but more intimate and in many ways more vivid, with houses standing to their original heights and interiors that feel genuinely habitable.
Did you know? Unlike Pompeii's organic materials which burned away, at Herculaneum wood, food, fabric, and even a complete wooden double bed survived carbonised, buried by pyroclastic surges rather than ash.
