About Galleria Borbonica
A secret Bourbon tunnel network built in 1853 beneath the Royal Palace area, used as a WWII shelter and still housing vintage vehicles abandoned since the war, now open for atmospheric guided tours.
The Galleria Borbonica is one of Naples' best-kept secrets and most atmospheric underground spaces. The tunnel was commissioned by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon in 1853 as a secure escape route connecting the Royal Palace area to the barracks on the Via Morelli, allowing the king and his court to flee in case of revolution. The architect Enrico Alvino designed the grand vaulted passage, which was partially completed when the Bourbon dynasty fell in 1861 and the project was abandoned. The tunnels were then largely forgotten until World War II, when the extensive spaces were converted into a large air raid shelter capable of housing thousands of civilians and military vehicles. After the war, the shelter was sealed, but the vehicles, motorcycles, and equipment left inside were never removed. Today, guided tours take visitors through the atmospheric chambers past dozens of vintage cars, police motorcycles, and military equipment still parked exactly as they were left in the 1940s, along with ancient statuary and artefacts found during the excavation.
Did you know? The Galleria Borbonica was built as a secret royal escape tunnel in 1853 but never completed, when it was sealed as a WWII shelter in 1940, dozens of military and civilian vehicles were left inside and never retrieved.
