About Mount Vesuvius

The only active volcano on the European mainland, and the most dangerous in the world, last erupted in 1944 and looms over Naples, offering a dramatic hike to the crater rim with sweeping Bay of Naples views.

Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that destroyed Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae in 79 AD, rises to 1,281 metres above sea level on the eastern shore of the Bay of Naples and remains one of the most closely monitored and potentially dangerous volcanoes in the world. It is classified as a Decade Volcano by the United Nations because of its proximity to the 3 million people of the Naples metropolitan area. Last erupting in March 1944, destroying several villages on its flanks, Vesuvius is considered dormant but not extinct, and an eruption within the next century is considered likely by volcanologists. A national park surrounds the volcano, and a well-maintained path leads from a car park at around 1,000 metres up to the crater rim, where the fumaroles, jets of sulphurous steam from the active interior, are visible. The views from the crater are extraordinary on a clear day, encompassing the entire Bay of Naples, Capri, Ischia, the Sorrentine Peninsula, and the entire coastal strip from Naples to Salerno.

Did you know? Vesuvius is classified as a Decade Volcano by the United Nations due to its proximity to 3 million people in the Naples metropolitan area, making it the most dangerous volcano in the world by population at risk.
