About Pompeii: Day Trip from Naples

A 35-minute train journey from Naples brings you to Pompeii, the Roman city buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD, the most extraordinary archaeological site in the world, where 2,000 years of history lie exactly as the volcano left them.

Pompeii, 25 kilometres southeast of Naples, is accessible by the Circumvesuviana railway (departing from Naples Centrale or Piazza Garibaldi) and takes approximately 35 minutes. The archaeological site covers about 66 hectares, of which roughly two-thirds have been excavated, and represents the most complete preserved ancient Roman city in existence. The eruption of Vesuvius on 24 August 79 AD buried the city in up to 6 metres of volcanic pumice and ash, killing an estimated 2,000 people who failed to escape and preserving the city in a remarkable snapshot of Roman life at its height. Forum, temples, brothels, baths, amphitheatre, shops, houses large and small, garden walls, election graffiti, bread ovens, and stepping stones across the streets, everything is here. Allow a minimum of four hours; a full day is better. The site has multiple entrances; the Porta Marina entrance is most convenient from the Pompeii Scavi train station. Water and comfortable shoes are essential.

Did you know? Pompeii was re-discovered in 1748, but the critical breakthrough came in 1863 when archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli invented the technique of pouring plaster into the voids left by decomposed bodies, creating hauntingly realistic casts.
