About Quartieri Spagnoli

The labyrinthine 16th-century Spanish soldiers' quarter, a tight grid of narrow streets with washing lines overhead, Maradona shrines, street food vendors, and an unmistakably raw pulse of Neapolitan life.

The Quartieri Spagnoli, Spanish Quarters, were built in the mid-sixteenth century by the Spanish viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo to house the troops of the Spanish garrison. The streets were laid in a strict military grid at right angles to the main streets of the historic centre, creating the dense, compressed urban texture that remains today. Over the centuries the neighbourhood became one of the most densely populated urban areas in Europe, and its tight grid of low buildings and narrow alleys, dark enough at midday that the sun barely reaches the ground, acquired a legendary reputation for poverty, criminality, and resistance to authority. Today the Quartieri Spagnoli are famous above all for their Maradona shrines: the great Argentine footballer played for SSC Napoli from 1984 to 1991 and is worshipped in this neighbourhood with an intensity that borders on the religious, with murals, altars, and offerings at every turn.

Did you know? The Quartieri Spagnoli were laid out in a military grid in the 1540s to house Spanish garrison troops, the streets were designed to allow rapid troop deployment and surveillance.
