About Teatro Romano de Málaga
A remarkably well-preserved 1st-century BC Roman theatre at the foot of the Alcazaba, discovered in 1951 during demolition works, excavated over decades, and now fully restored with its original cavea, orchestra, and stage visible at street level in the heart of the historic centre.
The Teatro Romano de Málaga is a remarkably well-preserved Roman theatre from the 1st century BC, discovered in 1951 during demolition work in the historic centre. The theatre dates from the reign of Augustus and measures approximately 31 metres in diameter. It was used continuously until the 3rd century AD, then fell into disuse and was gradually built over. During the Moorish period, the stone was quarried for use in building the Alcazaba directly above, a fact confirmed by the discovery of Roman stones in the Alcazaba's walls. The theatre has been extensively excavated and restored and can be visited at street level for free.
Did you know? The Teatro Romano de Málaga was effectively invisible for 1,500 years, it was buried under later construction, and the very stones of the theatre were quarried and reused in the Alcazaba directly above it. When the theatre was finally excavated in the 1990s, archaeologists found Roman stones in the Alcazaba's walls that matched the gaps in the theatre's structure perfectly, providing direct physical evidence of the medieval quarrying.
