About Museo Picasso Málaga

The museum dedicated to Málaga's most famous native son, housed in a magnificent 16th-century Renaissance palace, with 285 works spanning Picasso's entire career donated by his family, and archaeological remains from the Phoenician to Moorish periods visible beneath the building.

The Museo Picasso Málaga is one of the most important art museums in Spain, dedicated to Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), who was born in Málaga and spent his early childhood here before his family moved to Barcelona and later Paris. The museum opened in 2003 in the Palacio de Buenavista, a 16th-century Renaissance palace. The collection consists of 285 works donated or loaned by members of Picasso's family, including his daughter-in-law Christine Ruiz-Picasso and his grandson Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, and spans the full range of his career from early academic works to Cubist masterpieces to late works. The palace also contains significant archaeological remains visible through glass floors.

Did you know? Picasso's refusal to return to Spain as long as Franco ruled was absolute. He refused to allow his painting Guernica, currently in the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, to return to Spain until democracy was restored, and he specified that it should be kept outside Spain until that condition was met. Guernica returned to Spain only in 1981, eight years after Picasso's death and six years after Franco's death.
