About Mercado de Atarazanas
Málaga's historic iron and glass food market, built in 1876 incorporating the original 14th-century Moorish arch of the city's arsenal, now a spectacular fusion of medieval Islamic gateway and 19th-century iron architecture, with a magnificent stained glass window depicting the monuments of Málaga.
The Mercado de Atarazanas is Málaga's main covered food market, housed in a remarkable 19th-century iron and glass building that incorporates the original 14th-century Moorish gateway arch of the city's naval arsenal (atarazanas). The market was built in 1876, and the architect incorporated the surviving Moorish arch as the main entrance, a seven-arched horseshoe gate of exceptional quality that now provides the facade of the market building. The interior is dominated by a vast stained glass window at the far end depicting the monuments and landmarks of Málaga, with the bright Andalusian light streaming through the coloured glass and illuminating the market stalls.
Did you know? The Arabic inscription running across the top of the Moorish gate at the entrance to the Mercado de Atarazanas reads: "Only God is victorious", the same inscription that appears repeatedly in the Alhambra of Granada. This phrase was the motto of the Nasrid dynasty that ruled Granada and built the gate, and its presence on a market entrance in modern Málaga is one of the most quietly dramatic survivals of the Islamic past in Andalusia.
