About Centre for Contemporary Art (CAC Málaga)
One of the most important contemporary art museums in Spain, housed in a converted 1930s wholesale market building in the Soho district, with an outstanding collection of international contemporary art including major works by Louise Bourgeois, Cindy Sherman, and Thomas Ruff, all accessible free of charge.
The Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC) is one of the leading contemporary art institutions in Spain, founded in 2003 in a converted 1930s wholesale food market in the emerging Soho district near the port. The permanent collection includes major works by international artists of the second half of the 20th century and early 21st century, including Louise Bourgeois, Thomas Ruff, Cindy Sherman, Miquel Barceló, and many others. The museum also hosts major temporary exhibitions. Unusually for a museum of its quality, admission is free. The surrounding Soho district has developed into Málaga's arts quarter, with street art, galleries, and creative businesses.
Did you know? Málaga has one of the highest concentrations of museums per square kilometre of any city in Spain, more than 30 museums in the historic centre and its immediate surroundings. This has been a deliberate policy since the early 2000s, when the city decided to position itself as a cultural destination to complement its beach tourism. The strategy has been remarkably successful: Málaga now attracts significant numbers of visitors specifically for its museums.
