About Calle Larios
Málaga's grand 19th-century pedestrian boulevard, a magnificent marble-paved shopping street connecting the Cathedral to the port, lined with neo-Renaissance facades, luxury shops, and street terraces, famous for its Christmas lights and its role as the social spine of the city.
Calle Larios is the main street of Málaga, a 360-metre-long pedestrian boulevard paved with white marble, built in 1891 and named after the local industrialist and politician Manuel Domingo Larios. The street connects the Plaza de la Constitución at its northern end (near the Cathedral) to the Alameda Principal and the port at its southern end. The buildings lining the street are uniform neo-Renaissance facades from the 1890s, built as part of a unified urban project. The street is lined with café terraces and luxury shops and is the main gathering place for Málaga residents. Its Christmas lighting installation is considered among the finest in Spain.
Did you know? The Larios family, who funded Calle Larios, also founded the gin distillery that bears their name, Larios Gin, still one of the best-selling gin brands in Spain. The family's fortune came from sugar production in Málaga's province (using sugar cane grown in the warm coastal climate), textile manufacturing, and distilling. They were the dominant economic power in Málaga for much of the 19th century.
