About National Archaeological Museum

Spain's most important archaeological collection, including the iconic Lady of Elche, Iberian treasures, Roman Spain, and the magnificent Visigothic Guarrazar treasure crowns.

The Museo Arqueológico Nacional (MAN) houses Spain's most important archaeological collection, tracing the human story of the Iberian Peninsula from prehistoric cave paintings through Greek and Phoenician colonisation, Iberian culture, Roman Spain, the Visigothic kingdoms, and into the medieval period. The museum occupies an elegant neoclassical building shared with the National Library in the Biblioteca Nacional compound. The crown jewels of the collection are the Lady of Elche, a stunning 4th-century BC Iberian stone bust of extraordinary artistry; the magnificent gilded crown collection from the Guarrazar Treasure, votive offerings of Visigothic kings from the 7th century AD; and the Dama de Baza, a painted Iberian funerary sculpture. The museum was comprehensively renovated and reopened in 2014.

Did you know? The Lady of Elche has been called the most important pre-Roman sculpture found in Spain, nobody knows if she represents a goddess, a priestess, or a noblewoman.
