About Royal Armoury (Armería Real)

One of the finest collections of European armour in the world, housed within the Royal Palace complex, featuring battle suits of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and King Philip II.

The Real Armería occupies a wing of the Royal Palace complex and is widely regarded as one of the finest collections of arms and armour in the world. The collection was assembled mainly by the Habsburg monarchs of Spain in the 16th century, beginning with the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (also known as King Charles I of Spain). The exhibits include magnificent parade armours, tournament suits, campaign armours used in actual battles, firearms, swords, and horse armour. The centrepiece is Charles V's personal battle armour, which he wore in the campaigns of his reign. Many pieces can be precisely dated and attributed to the craftsmen who made them, the Emperor documented everything. Philip II, a meticulous record-keeper himself, also contributed extensively to the collection.

Did you know? Charles V kept meticulous records of every piece of armour he owned, you can identify exactly which battle many pieces were used in.
