The Palacio de Cristal is one of the most beautiful 19th-century iron-and-glass structures in Europe, standing in the heart of the Retiro Park beside its own small lake. Designed by the architect Ricardo Velázquez Bosco, it was built in 1887 for the Philippine Colonial Exhibition, an exposition showcasing Spain's remaining Pacific colonial possessions. The building was inspired by the Great Exhibition's Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London. The structure consists of a large central dome flanked by lower wings, all built from prefabricated cast-iron components and glazed with thousands of individual glass panes. Today, the Palacio de Cristal functions as an extension gallery for the Reina Sofía Museum, hosting temporary contemporary and modern art installations. Because the building is flooded with natural light and its reflections change with the time of day and season, it is especially suited to large-scale environmental and light-based artworks.
