About Mercado de San Miguel

A stunning early 20th-century iron and glass market hall adjacent to Plaza Mayor, transformed into Madrid's finest gourmet food market with tapas, jamón, seafood, and wines from across Spain.

The Mercado de San Miguel is Madrid's most elegant and visited food market, a beautiful early 20th-century iron and glass structure adjacent to the Plaza Mayor that has been transformed into one of Europe's finest gourmet food markets. The market building was constructed between 1913 and 1916 and is one of the last surviving examples of the ornate iron market hall architecture that was fashionable across Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After years of decline, the market was extensively restored and reopened in 2009 as a modern food hall, with approximately 33 vendors selling high-quality Spanish food products, jamón ibérico, fresh seafood on ice, artisan cheeses, cured meats, olives, Spanish wines and vermouths, fresh oysters, freshly made croquetas, and much more. It is simultaneously a place to shop for quality Spanish products and a place to eat and drink standing at the bars around each stall. It is busy all day but particularly lively in the evening, when the market fills with locals and tourists picking up pintxos, a glass of Galician white wine, or a plate of jamón ibérico de bellota.
