About El Rastro Market

Madrid's legendary Sunday flea market, a centuries-old tradition in the La Latina neighbourhood, with over 1,000 stalls selling antiques, vintage clothing, bric-a-brac, and everything imaginable.

El Rastro is one of the oldest and most beloved traditions in Madrid, a Sunday flea market that has been held in the La Latina neighbourhood since at least the 16th century. Every Sunday and public holiday morning from 9am to 3pm, the streets radiating out from the Ribera de Curtidores fill with over 1,000 stalls selling antiques, vintage clothing, old books and records, paintings, jewellery, toys, tools, and an endless variety of curious objects. Beyond the official stalls, hundreds of informal sellers spread their wares on sheets and boxes. The market extends for many blocks and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each week, making it one of the largest open-air markets in Europe. The area has been associated with trade and the recycling of goods since at least the 15th century, when animal hides (rastro means 'trail of blood') were sold here. After the market, the tradition is to continue to the nearby Cava Baja for tapas and vermouth.

Did you know? El Rastro has been held in Madrid's La Latina neighbourhood every Sunday for over 500 years, one of the longest continuously running markets in Europe.
