About Gran Vía
Madrid's most celebrated boulevard, opened in 1910, lined with Art Nouveau and Art Deco masterpieces including the Edificio Metrópolis, the Edificio Telefónica, and classic cinemas, often called 'Madrid's Broadway'.
The Gran Vía is Madrid's great showpiece boulevard, stretching for 1.3 kilometres from the Edificio Metrópolis at its eastern end to the Plaza de España at its western end. Construction began in 1910 and was not completed until 1929, requiring the demolition of thousands of buildings and the displacement of tens of thousands of residents, one of the most ambitious urban surgery projects in European history. The result was a wide, elegant avenue lined with some of the finest examples of early 20th-century architecture in Spain. The buildings range from French Baroque (the Metrópolis) to Viennese Secession to Spanish Art Deco to neo-Baroque. The Edificio Telefónica, completed in 1929, was Spain's first true skyscraper. Today the Gran Vía is Madrid's major shopping, theatre, and entertainment street, home to classic cinemas including the Capitol, Callao, and Palacio de la Música.
Did you know? The Gran Vía took nearly two decades to construct (1910–1929), requiring the demolition of thousands of buildings and displacement of tens of thousands of residents.
