About Almudena Cathedral
Madrid's most recent cathedral, neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque, completed in 1993 after over 100 years of construction, famous for the 2004 royal wedding of Prince Felipe and Letizia, and facing the Royal Palace across its dramatic square.
The Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena is Madrid's Roman Catholic cathedral, remarkable in European terms for being one of the newest major cathedrals on the continent. Construction began in 1879, following a design by Francisco de Cubas, but progressed very slowly due to interruptions from the Spanish Civil War, funding difficulties, and changes of architect. The original neo-Gothic design was substantially modified in the 1940s by Fernando Chueca Goitia, who designed the neo-Romanesque crypt and exterior, while the interior was completed in a 20th-century Gothic style. Pope John Paul II consecrated the cathedral in 1993, making it one of the youngest major cathedrals in Europe. Its most celebrated recent event was the royal wedding of the then Prince of Asturias, Felipe, and Letizia Ortiz in May 2004. The cathedral faces the Royal Palace across the Plaza de la Armería, creating a remarkable architectural dialogue between Spain's newest sacred building and one of its oldest royal residences.
