About Mount Rigi
The free-standing 'Queen of the Mountains' between three lakes, climbed since 1871 by the Vitznau line, Europe's first mountain rack railway, with panoramas that reach to the Black Forest.
Rigi is a broad massif rising between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz, its summit, Rigi Kulm, reaching about 1,798 metres. Because it stands apart from the higher Alps, its panorama is exceptionally free, sweeping over the Central Swiss lakes to the main chain of the Alps and, in clear weather, as far as the Black Forest. This open outlook earned it the affectionate nickname 'Queen of the Mountains' and drew nineteenth-century travellers and artists, among them J. M. W. Turner and Mark Twain.
The mountain is best known as a railway pioneer. The Vitznau–Rigi line, opened in 1871 and engineered by Niklaus Riggenbach using his patented ladder-rack system, was the first mountain rack railway in Europe, though Mount Washington in the United States had opened one a few years earlier. Today cog railways from Vitznau and Arth-Goldau and a cableway from Weggis all reach the summit.
