Mount Pilatus is the craggy massif that towers over Lucerne from the south, its highest peak, the Tomlishorn, reaching about 2,128 metres. For centuries it was wrapped in dark legend: local lore held that the ghost of Pontius Pilate haunted a lake near the summit and that healing dragons lived in its caves. The name most likely comes not from Pilate but from the Latin pileatus, 'capped,' for the clouds that so often hide the top.
The mountain's greatest draw is the Pilatus Railway, which climbs from Alpnachstad on Lake Lucerne to the Pilatus Kulm station just below the summit. Opened in 1889 and still billed as the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, it reaches a maximum gradient of 48 percent, made possible by engineer Eduard Locher's unique horizontal double-rack system. The record gradient has stood unbeaten since the line opened.
