About Maritime Museum of Montenegro
Set in the Baroque Grgurina Palace, this museum charts the seafaring history of Kotor and the Bay of Kotor across three floors of ship models, captains and instruments.
The Maritime Museum of Montenegro (Pomorski muzej Crne Gore), in Kotor's Old Town, presents the long seafaring history of Kotor and the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska). Its collection grew out of a naval collection founded around 1880 by the Boka Navy fraternity (Bokeljska Mornarica), opened to the public in 1900 and re-arranged in 1938 on the first floor of the present building. Displayed across three floors, it includes ship models, portraits of captains, sailors' uniforms, weapons, navigational instruments, paintings and photographs.
The museum occupies the Baroque palace of the noble Grgurina family, built at the beginning of the eighteenth century and completely restored and adapted for the museum between 1949 and 1952. The building was significantly damaged by the earthquake of 15 April 1979, after which conservation and restoration works were carried out from 1982 to 1984. Kotor's seafaring tradition reaches back to the Middle Ages and is closely linked with the Boka Navy, the maritime brotherhood of the bay.
Did you know? The museum began as a naval collection assembled by the Boka Navy fraternity around 1880; it opened to the public in 1900 and moved to the first floor of this palace in 1938.
