About Ladder of Kotor

A switchback footpath zig-zagging up the mountain wall behind Kotor, once the caravan road to the interior, now a stiff climb rewarded with widening views over the bay.

The Ladder of Kotor (Montenegrin: Kotorske serpentine) is a historic switchback footpath that climbs the near-vertical mountain wall directly behind Kotor, linking the town on the bay with the uplands toward Njeguši, Cetinje and Mount Lovćen. The trail begins just outside the Northern (River) Gate at the Skurda stream, next to the old hydroelectric plant, and rises in roughly seventy tight switchbacks. It gains on the order of 900 metres over about 6.5 kilometres one way, topping out near the Krstac pass on the old Kotor-Njeguši road.

For centuries the path was the main caravan and mule route between the coast and the Montenegrin interior, carrying salt and oil uphill and meat, dairy and livestock down to market. A junction partway up connects to the Castle of San Giovanni and Kotor's walls, and the ascent opens progressively wider panoramas across the whole Bay of Kotor.

Did you know? The switchback count is folklore as much as survey. Hikers say about seventy, one route map counts seventy-two; nobody carries an official tally up a mountain this steep, so pick your favourite number.
