About Bay of Kotor

A deep, winding Adriatic inlet ringed by limestone mountains, often miscalled a fjord. It is really a drowned river canyon, and the classic base for boat trips on the water.

The Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska) is a deep, winding inlet of the Adriatic Sea in south-western Montenegro, ringed by the steep limestone mountains of Orjen and Lovćen. Despite its common marketing as a fjord, it is geologically a ria: a drowned river valley of the former Bokelj River, submerged by the sea rather than carved by glaciers. It runs about 28 kilometres long, with roughly 107 kilometres of shoreline and a water area near 87 square kilometres. Its average depth is about 27 metres and its maximum about 60 metres.

The bay is a chain of broad basins joined by narrow channels, the inner Bay of Risan and Bay of Kotor reached through the Verige Strait, only about 340 metres wide at its neck. Its towns include Kotor, Perast, Risan, Tivat and Herceg Novi. The whole region was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Did you know? Call it a fjord and a geologist will wince. Fjords are glacier-carved; the Boka is a ria, a river canyon drowned by the rising Adriatic. Same beauty, entirely different origin story.
