About Church of St Nicholas
The Old Town's largest Orthodox church, with twin bell towers and dark domes: it looks medieval but was actually built between 1902 and 1909, beside ancient St Luke.
The Church of St Nicholas is a Serbian Orthodox church on the Square of St Luke, in the northern part of Kotor's Old Town, beside the older Church of St Luke. It was built between 1902 and 1909, replacing an earlier Orthodox church that had stood on the site from 1810 until it burned down on Christmas Eve 1896, in a fire that also destroyed the adjoining former French barracks. Built in a Serbo-Byzantine revival style, it appears far older than it is.
The facade is framed by two tall bell towers capped with dark domes and gilded crosses, and a mosaic of St Nicholas is set over the entrance. It is the largest Orthodox church in Kotor's Old Town and remains open to visitors. Heritage and tourism sources attribute the design to the Croatian architect Ćiril Iveković and the iconostasis to Franjo Ziegler, and record the foundation stone being consecrated by Bishop Gerasim Petranović. The church belongs to the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Did you know? Its heavy stonework and Byzantine domes make St Nicholas look medieval, but it is one of Kotor's youngest churches, built between 1902 and 1909 in a deliberately old-fashioned Serbo-Byzantine revival style.
