About Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (Sveti Tripun)

Kotor's Romanesque cathedral, consecrated in 1166, guards the relics of the town's patron Saint Tryphon behind two mismatched bell towers left uneven by the 1667 earthquake.

The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (Katedrala Svetog Tripuna) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Kotor's Old Town and the seat of the Diocese of Kotor, which covers the whole Bay of Kotor and the Municipality of Budva. This Romanesque church was consecrated on 19 June 1166, on the site of an earlier church that tradition dates to 809, built by the Kotor citizen Andrija Saracenis to house the relics of Saint Tryphon, the town's patron, brought from Constantinople.

The 1667 earthquake seriously damaged the cathedral; funds were insufficient for a complete rebuilding, and the two Baroque bell towers were reconstructed unevenly, the western one left about two metres shorter. Over the main altar rises the Great Ciborium, a stone canopy added in 1362 and carved with scenes from the saint's life, while the treasury preserves his relics, silver reliquaries and an early-eighteenth-century marble statue by Francesco Cabianca.

Did you know? By tradition, Saint Tryphon's relics reached Kotor in 809, bought from Venetian merchants and carried from Constantinople; one legend says a storm forced the ship into the bay, so the relics simply stayed.
