About El Greco Park
A rare patch of shade inside the old walls, named for the city's most famous son, El Greco, who was born nearby but almost certainly never sat here.
El Greco Park (Greek Parko Theotokopoulou) is a small, shaded public park in the centre of Heraklion, one of the few green spaces inside the old Venetian walls. It sits just off the central axis near the Eleftherias and Lions areas, a short walk from the Archaeological Museum and the main shopping streets, and functions as a shaded rest stop with cafes and benches.
The park is named in honour of the painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, who was born in the Heraklion area, then Venetian Candia, in 1541. The name reflects the city's pride in El Greco as its most celebrated native son, even though he spent his career in Italy and Spain and has no personal connection to the park's location.
Did you know? The park is a tribute, not a place from the painter's life. El Greco was born in the Heraklion area in 1541 but left for Italy and Spain, never connected to this green space.
How long should you spend at El Greco Park?
Plan about ~30 min at El Greco Park. That is enough to take it in and hear its narrated story; stay longer if it grabs you. The tour is self-guided, so there is no rush.
