About Church of St Catherine of Sinai (Museum of Christian Art)

A plain Venetian church beside the cathedral, now a glowing museum of Cretan-School icons where Byzantium meets the Renaissance, with six masterpieces by the master Michael Damaskinos.

The Venetian-era church of Agia Aikaterini (St Catherine) of the Sinaites stands beside the cathedral of Agios Minas in central Heraklion and today houses the Museum of Christian Art of the Archdiocese of Crete. The church was a dependency of St Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai and, under Venetian rule, a leading centre of learning and icon painting linked to the Cretan School. It became a religious museum in 1967.

The displays present Cretan ecclesiastical art from roughly the 14th to the 19th century. The star exhibits are six icons by the 16th-century Cretan master Michael Damaskinos, including 'The Adoration of the Magi', 'The Last Supper', 'The Burning Bush' and 'The Divine Liturgy'. The collection also includes works attributed to the 15th-century painter Angelos Akotantos and other representative pieces of the Cretan School of iconography.

Did you know? This was a satellite of Mount Sinai. The church served as a dependency of St Catherine's Monastery in Egypt, one of the world's oldest, linking a small Heraklion chapel to a monastic network across the sea.
