About 1866 Street Market (Odos 1866)

Heraklion's narrow open-air market street, named for the 1866 revolution, where crates of produce, cheese, raki and spices hide fragments of the vanished Venetian city among the stalls.

Odos 1866, or 1866 Street, is Heraklion's historic open-air market, running through the old town from the Meidani area to Kornarou Square, just south of Lions Square and the Morosini Fountain. It is named after the year 1866, when the Great Cretan Revolution against Ottoman rule began, a three-year uprising that was the largest of several revolts before Crete gained autonomy at the end of the century.

Long the walled city's central meeting and shopping place, the street is lined with shops and stalls selling fruit and vegetables, herbs and spices, cheese and meat, local raki, Cretan products and souvenirs, with small cafes and tavernas along the way. Fragments of Venetian Heraklion survive among the shops, including a Venetian archway inside the Koudoumas coffee shop and a 16th-century church engulfed by later buildings nearby.

Did you know? The street takes its name from 1866, the year the Great Cretan Revolution against Ottoman rule broke out, a three-year uprising and the largest of several revolts before Crete finally won its autonomy.
