About Basilica of Saint Mark
A 13th-century Venetian state church on Lions Square, later an Ottoman mosque and now the city art gallery, though most of what stands is a 1950s rebuild.
The Basilica of Saint Mark stands on Lions Square, next to the Morosini Fountain, in the heart of Heraklion's old town. It was built in 1239, soon after Venice took Crete following the Fourth Crusade, and was dedicated to Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice. As the state church of the Venetian administration, it was where ducal decrees were proclaimed, official ceremonies were held, and members of the ruling class were buried.
After the Ottoman conquest of 1669, the building was converted into the Defterdar Ahmet Pasha Mosque and served as a mosque until 1915, when it was closed by the Greek state. Repeatedly damaged by earthquakes over the centuries, it was restored between 1956 and 1960, and the structure seen today is largely a reconstruction from that period. It now houses the Municipal Art Gallery of Heraklion.
Did you know? Though it reads as an ancient Venetian church, the basilica standing today is largely a mid-20th-century reconstruction, built after earlier versions repeatedly collapsed in earthquakes before the restoration of 1956 to 1960.
