About Koules Fortress
A squat Venetian sea fort built on sunken, stone-filled ships, guarding the old harbour mouth with lion-carved gates and walls that run nearly nine metres thick.
Koules, known to the Venetians as Castello a Mare or Rocca a Mare, is the sea fortress guarding the entrance to Heraklion's old harbour. The Republic of Venice completed this bastion-shaped fort around 1540, replacing an earlier Byzantine tower that was demolished in 1523. To extend the mole beneath it, old ships were filled with stone and deliberately sunk to form a breakwater.
The fort has two storeys and twenty-six rooms that once served as barracks, storerooms, a prison, a chapel, a mill, a bakery and a water cistern, with outer walls up to about 8.7 metres thick. Marble reliefs of the winged Lion of St Mark mark its gates. After the Siege of Candia ended in 1669 it passed to the Ottomans, who gave it the name Koules, from the Turkish for water tower. A lighthouse added in the 1830s operated until 1960.
Did you know? To enlarge the mole the fort stands on, Venetian engineers filled old ships with stone and deliberately sank them, so its whole foundation rests on a breakwater of drowned boats.
