About Heraklion Archaeological Museum

The world's greatest hoard of Minoan art, from the snake-gripping goddesses and the bull-leaping fresco to a spiral-stamped clay disc no scholar alive has ever managed to read.

The Heraklion Archaeological Museum holds the world's most important collection of Minoan antiquities, with finds spanning Cretan prehistory and history. Its most celebrated object is the Phaistos Disc, a fired-clay disc found in 1908 by the Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier at the palace of Phaistos, stamped on both faces with 45 signs arranged in a spiral and impressed with individual stamps. The script remains undeciphered.

Other highlights include the two faience Snake Goddess figurines of about 1600 BC, excavated by Arthur Evans at Knossos and substantially restored by him; the Bull-Leaping (Toreador) fresco from Knossos, showing figures vaulting a charging bull; and the gold Bee Pendant from the Chrysolakkos necropolis near Malia, about 1800-1700 BC, depicting two bees holding a drop of honey. The galleries gather material from Knossos, Phaistos, Malia and sites across Crete.

Did you know? Each sign on the Phaistos Disc was punched into wet clay with a reusable stamp, a kind of movable type over three thousand years before Gutenberg, using forty-five different signs in all.
